Ear piercing ceremony for babies in Bangalore: the ritual, the method, and the aftercare
The goldsmith is coming at ten, the baby’s mama has the earrings in his pocket, and everyone has an opinion about whether it hurts. (Yes, for a second. Then there is a sweet, and it is forgotten.)
Here is how to plan the ear piercing ceremony so it is quick, clean and calm.
What it is
Karnavedha is the Sanskrit name for the ritual piercing of the ears. In Tamil homes it is kaadhu kuthu, often done together with the mottai (first haircut). In Kannada homes it is kivi chuchchuvudu, and in Telugu homes chevulu kuttadam. Many North Indian families do it together with the mundan.
It is done for boys and girls in many families, and mostly for girls in others. Ask your elders what your family does.
Which age
- In the first year, often around the first birthday or with the mundan. Very common in South Indian families.
- In the 3rd or 5th year, in some families.
- At the family temple, as part of a vow, in many Tamil and Telugu families.
Before you fix the date, ask your paediatrician. Some prefer to wait until certain vaccinations are done, or until the baby is a little older. The ritual can wait a few weeks. Ears cannot be un-pierced.
Goldsmith, jeweller or clinic
- A traditional goldsmith. Pierces with a fine gold wire, then fits a stud. This is the traditional way in many South Indian families, and the elders will often insist on it.
- A jeweller with a piercing gun. Quick and common in malls and jewellery shops.
- A doctor at a clinic. The most sterile option. Some paediatric and skin clinics in Bangalore offer it.
Whoever does it, check these:
- Clean hands, and gloves if possible.
- A new needle or a sterile stud, opened in front of you. Never a reused one.
- Both ears marked first with a pen, and checked by you, so the holes are level.
- Small, plain gold studs with a screw back. No dangling earrings until the holes have healed.
Many families now do the ritual part at home with the goldsmith, and if the elders agree, the piercing itself at a clinic. A good compromise.
What happens
- A short puja, with Ganapati puja and sankalpa, if your family does one.
- The lap. The child sits in a parent’s or the maternal uncle’s lap. In Tamil homes, the mama’s lap is an important part of the day.
- Marking. The piercer marks both ears.
- The piercing. One ear, then the other, quickly.
- A sweet, and lots of attention.
- Gifts. The maternal uncle often gives the earrings or other gold.
The whole piercing takes a few minutes. The crying usually stops before the photos do.
Aftercare
- Clean twice a day with what your doctor or piercer suggests.
- Do not twist or remove the studs until the holes heal, usually a few weeks.
- Keep hair oil, powder and shampoo away from the ears for a few days.
- Watch for swelling, pus or fever. If you see any, see your doctor.
What it costs in 2026
Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.
Piercing: Rs 300 to Rs 2,500. A goldsmith or jeweller is usually at the lower end. A clinic charges more.
Gold studs: at the day’s gold rate. Small baby studs are light, but gold is the biggest cost on the day.
Priest: Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 for a short puja, if your family does one.
Lunch: Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 for close family.
If you combine it with the mundan or first birthday, the lunch and priest are shared, which saves money and a second day off.

The short version
Many families do the ear piercing in the first year, often with the mundan. Ask your paediatrician first. Choose a goldsmith, a jeweller or a clinic, and insist on clean hands, a new needle and level marks. Use small gold studs with a screw back, and clean the ears twice a day until they heal.

Common questions
At what age is the ear piercing ceremony done?
Many families do it in the first year, often with the mundan or the first birthday. Some do it in the 3rd or 5th year. Ask your paediatrician what they suggest, and check that the child's vaccinations are on schedule.
Should a goldsmith, a jeweller or a doctor pierce the ears?
All three are common. A traditional goldsmith uses a fine gold wire and is part of the ritual in many families. A jeweller uses a piercing gun. A doctor at a clinic offers the most sterile setting. Whoever you choose, insist on clean hands, a new needle or sterile stud, and the same depth in both ears.
Why does the maternal uncle hold the child?
In many South Indian homes, especially Tamil ones, the child sits in the maternal uncle's (mama's) lap for the ear piercing. It shows his role in the child's life. He usually also gives the child gold, often the earrings.
How do we look after the ears afterwards?
Clean the front and back of each ear twice a day with what your doctor or piercer suggests. Do not twist the studs. Keep hair, oil and powder away for a few days. If you see swelling, pus or fever, see your doctor.
