Annaprashan in Bangalore: the baby's first rice, at home or at the temple

9 October 2026

Six months in, the baby has started watching your plate like it owes them money. The elders say it is time for the annaprashan. You are wondering whether this is a big function or a small one, and whether the baby is allowed to eat whatever is put in front of them on the day.

It is a small, happy function, and it is easy to plan. Here is the whole thing.

What it is

Annaprashan (also annaprasana, or annaprasanam) means “eating food”. It marks the baby’s first taste of solid food, usually rice, after months of only milk. The food is first offered to the deity, then a little is fed to the baby with a blessing.

Different families know it by different names. It is mukhe bhaat for Bengali families, where the baby’s maternal uncle (mama) usually does the feeding. It is choroonu for many Malayali families, famously done at Guruvayur. And it is annaprasanam in many Tamil and Telugu homes.

Which month

Around 6 months, when the baby is ready to start solids. Many families do it in the 6th month for boys and the 5th or 7th month for girls. The priest picks a good day inside that month.

The one check before you fix anything: ask your paediatrician whether the baby is ready for solids. Some babies are ready a little early, some a little late. If the baby is not ready, wait a few weeks. The ritual can follow the baby. It does not work the other way round.

Home or temple

  • At home. A priest comes, the family gathers, and lunch follows. Best if you want the grandparents and cousins together.
  • At a temple. Simple, quick and cheap. Many Bangalore temples do annaprashan. Ask the temple office about the days, timings and fee. Then host a small lunch at home.
  • Both. Temple in the morning for the ritual, family lunch at home. A common and very sensible plan.

What happens

A home annaprashan takes about an hour:

  1. Ganapati puja and sankalpa with the baby’s name and nakshatra.
  2. Offering to the deity. The payasam or rice is offered first.
  3. The first feed. The father, a grandparent or the maternal uncle (in Bengali homes) feeds the baby a tiny amount. A taste, not a meal. A silver spoon is traditional. A clean finger works too.
  4. The choosing game. Many families place a few objects in front of the baby, such as a book, a pen, money, gold, soil or a toy. Whatever the baby grabs first is said to show their future. The baby will grab the shiniest thing, or try to eat the pen. Both are fine.
  5. Blessings, aarti, lunch.

What to feed, and what not to

The ritual food is usually a little rice payasam (kheer) or plain cooked rice with ghee. A few practical notes:

  • Just a taste. One or two tiny spoonfuls. The baby has never eaten solid food, and a big function is not the place to find out how they react.
  • No honey. Some old rituals use it, but doctors advise no honey before the age of one. Skip it, or touch it to the lips of the silver spoon only if your elders insist and your doctor agrees.
  • Go easy on the sugar and nuts. Ask the cook to make a plain, smooth version of the payasam just for the baby.
  • Do not let relatives feed the baby from their own plates afterwards. Somebody always tries.

What it costs in 2026

Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.

Priest: Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 for a home annaprashan with basic samagri. A temple charges its own fee, usually less.

Lunch: the biggest line. For 25 to 30 guests at home, roughly Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000, including the caterer’s minimum order. A simple banana-leaf lunch or a South Indian meal is perfect.

Decor: Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000. A small backdrop for photos and flowers at the puja. This is not a function that needs a decorator.

Extras: Rs 2,000 to Rs 8,000. The silver spoon or bowl (often a gift from the grandparents), new clothes for the baby, fruit, sweets and tamboola.

Realistic totals:

  • Temple ritual and a small family lunch: under Rs 15,000
  • Home function, 25 to 30 guests: Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000
  • Larger, 60 or more guests, home or clubhouse: Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000

That is exactly what Event Maami is for. A maami will call you back and help you plan it, at home or at a temple, with a clear cost. No charge for the conversation.

The short version

Do it around 6 months, once the paediatrician says the baby is ready for solids. Choose home, temple, or both. The baby only needs a taste of payasam or rice, and no honey. A home annaprashan for 25 to 30 guests costs about Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000, and a temple ritual with a small lunch can cost much less. Six months later comes the first birthday ayushya homam.

A note on the numbers

These are realistic 2026 Bangalore planning bands, based on current priest and catering rates in the city. Your real cost depends on headcount, locality, and whether you use a temple. Always get an itemised quote before you commit.

Common questions

When is annaprashan done?

Around the 6th month, when the baby is ready for solid food. Many families do it in the 6th month for boys and the 5th or 7th month for girls, on a date the priest picks. Check with your paediatrician that the baby is ready to start solids. If the baby is not ready, wait. The ritual can follow the baby.

What is fed to the baby at annaprashan?

Usually a tiny amount of rice payasam (kheer) or plain cooked rice with ghee, first offered to the deity. The baby only needs a taste, from a silver spoon or a finger. Do not give honey: doctors advise no honey before the age of one, even in a ritual.

Can we do annaprashan at a temple?

Yes, many families do. Guruvayur in Kerala is famous for it (the choroonu), and many Bangalore temples also do it. A temple annaprashan is simple and cheap. Ask the temple office about timings and fees, then host lunch at home for the family.

How much does an annaprashan cost in Bangalore?

A home annaprashan for 25 to 30 guests costs roughly Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000 in 2026. The priest is Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000, and lunch is the biggest line. A temple annaprashan with a small family lunch can cost under Rs 15,000.
