Vastu shanti pooja in Bangalore: when you need it, what happens, and what it costs

9 October 2026

You have the keys, the interiors are almost done, and someone has asked whether you are “doing the vastu also, or only the griha pravesh”. Here is what that means, when you need it, and when you do not.

What a vastu shanti is

Vastu shanti (also vastu puja, or vastu homam) is a puja and homa to the vastu purusha, the spirit of the site, and to the deities of the directions. The idea is to settle the house before you live in it, and to make peace for anything that was disturbed while building it.

It is different from the griha pravesh. The vastu shanti settles the house. The griha pravesh is the family entering it. For a new house, most families do both, usually in this order.

When you need it, and when you do not

Families usually do a vastu shanti:

  • For a new house you have built or bought, before you move in
  • After major renovation, especially if walls were broken or the layout changed
  • Before opening an office or shop, often with a Ganapathi homam or Lakshmi puja

Many families skip it:

  • For a rented flat. A simple griha pravesh with a Ganapati puja or a Satyanarayan pooja is the common choice.
  • When moving back into your own house after renting it out. Some families do a small puja instead.

None of this is a fixed rule. Ask your elders what your family does. If your family does a full vastu shanti for every move, do that.

How it fits with the griha pravesh

Two common plans:

  1. Evening before. The vastu shanti and homa the evening before, with only close family. The griha pravesh, with all the guests, the next morning at the muhurta. This keeps the big morning shorter.
  2. Same morning. The vastu shanti early, then the griha pravesh, then lunch. One long day, but only one day.

The priest fixes the times. For a big house function, plan option 1. For a small flat, option 2 is fine. The full griha pravesh order is in the step-by-step guide.

What happens

The exact steps depend on your tradition and your priest, but most vastu shantis include:

  1. Ganapati puja and sankalpa
  2. Punyahavachana, the purification
  3. Kalasha sthapana, setting up the water pots
  4. Vastu purusha puja, often with a drawn vastu mandala
  5. Navagraha puja, for the nine planets
  6. Vastu homa, the offerings into the fire
  7. Purnahuti and bali, the final offering
  8. Sprinkling the kalasha water through the house

It takes two to three hours. North Indian families usually call it vastu puja with a havan. South Indian families often say vastu shanti or vastu homam. The idea is the same.

Apartment rules for the homa

A homa means fire and smoke in a new flat. Check these before you book anything:

  • Is a homa allowed inside flats? Most associations allow it with notice. A few do not.
  • Smoke detectors. Ask the facility manager to cover or switch off the one in that room for the morning, and who will switch it back on.
  • The floor. Use a proper homa kund on bricks and sand. New tiles and wooden floors crack and burn.
  • Ventilation. Windows open, fans off during the homa (they blow ash everywhere), and something to cover the new curtains.

The full apartment checklist is in the griha pravesh in an apartment guide.

What it costs in 2026

Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.

Priest and samagri: Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000. One priest with a simple vastu homa is at the bottom. Two or three priests, an added Navagraha or Ganapathi homam, or a priest coming from across the city pushes it up. Always ask whether the homa kund, bricks, samidhe (homa wood) and ghee are included.

If you do it with the griha pravesh: the food and decor are for the whole day. The griha pravesh cost guide has those lines.

For an office or shop: the same priest cost, plus snacks or lunch for staff. Usually Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 in total.

The short version

A vastu shanti settles a new house before you live in it. Most families do it for a house they built or bought, or after big renovation, and skip it for a rented flat. Do it the evening before the griha pravesh, or early the same morning. Check your apartment’s rules on fire and smoke alarms. The priest and samagri cost about Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000.

A note on the numbers

These are realistic 2026 Bangalore planning bands, based on current priest rates in the city. Your real cost depends on the homas, the number of priests and your locality. Always get an itemised quote before you commit.

Common questions

What is the difference between vastu shanti and griha pravesh?

Vastu shanti is the puja and homa to the vastu purusha, the spirit of the site, to settle the house before you live in it. Griha pravesh is the entry into the house. For a new house, most families do both: the vastu shanti the evening before or early the same morning, then the griha pravesh. For a rented flat, many families skip the vastu shanti.

Do we need a vastu shanti for a rented flat?

Most families do not. The full vastu shanti is usually for a house you have built or bought, or after major renovation. For a rented flat, a simple griha pravesh with a Ganapati puja or Satyanarayan pooja is common. Ask your elders what your family does.

How much does a vastu shanti pooja cost in Bangalore?

The priest and samagri cost roughly Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000 in 2026, depending on the homas and the number of priests. If you do it with the griha pravesh, add the food and decor for the whole day. See the griha pravesh cost guide for that.

Can we do a vastu shanti for an office or shop?

Yes. Many businesses do a vastu puja before opening, often with a Ganapathi homam or Lakshmi puja. Do it before the furniture and staff move in, if you can, so there is space for the homa.
