Ganapathi homam at home in Bangalore: when, how, and what it costs

9 October 2026

You are starting something new: a house, a shop, a job, a car. Somebody says “do a Ganapathi homam first”. It is good advice. It is short, simple, and every priest in Bangalore knows how to do it.

Here is what to expect, what to arrange, and what it costs.

Why Ganapathi first

Ganesha is worshipped first, before any new start, to remove obstacles. A Ganapathi homam is a homa (fire offering) to Ganesha. It is often done on its own, and it is also the first part of many bigger functions, such as a griha pravesh or a wedding.

Families do it:

  • Before moving into a house, often with the griha pravesh
  • Before opening a business, shop or office
  • After buying a vehicle or property
  • On a birthday, or at the start of a new year
  • On Sankashti Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi, as a regular practice

The best time

Early morning. Many priests like to start around sunrise and finish before the day’s heat (and before the building’s water tanker arrives). If you are doing it before a griha pravesh or a business opening, the priest will fit it before the main muhurta.

What happens

A home Ganapathi homam takes about 1.5 to 2 hours:

  1. Sankalpa with the family’s names, gotra and the purpose
  2. Ganapati puja, with flowers and durva grass (the three-bladed grass Ganesha loves)
  3. Kalasha sthapana, setting up the water pot
  4. The homa. Offerings into the fire with the Ganapati mantras. Many priests use a set of offerings such as modakas, coconut, jaggery, banana, sesame and puffed rice. Some families do 108 or 1,008 offerings for a bigger homam.
  5. Purnahuti, the final offering
  6. Aarti and prasada

What you arrange

The priest usually brings the homa samagri (samidhe, ghee, powders, the kund if you ask). You usually arrange:

  • A Ganesha idol or picture, and a small platform for it
  • Flowers, garlands and durva grass
  • Coconuts, fruit, betel leaves and nuts
  • A lamp with oil or ghee, and camphor
  • Naivedya: modakas or kozhukattai, and a sweet
  • Tamboola and dakshina for the priest

Ask the priest for their full list a week before. Every priest’s list is slightly different, and the one item you forget will be the durva.

Apartment rules

A Ganapathi homam is small, but it is still fire indoors:

  • Tell the association the day before.
  • Smoke detector. Ask the facility manager to cover or switch off the one in that room, and to switch it back on after.
  • The kund. A proper homa kund on bricks and sand, not directly on tiles or wood.
  • Windows open, fans off during the homa.

What it costs in 2026

Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.

Priest and samagri: Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 for one priest and a standard homam at home.

Bigger homam: Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000. More priests, 1,008 offerings, or a Ganapathi homam combined with Navagraha or Lakshmi homa.

Food: depends on the occasion. For a family-only homam, prasada and a simple breakfast or lunch at home is enough. For a business opening, plan snacks for staff and guests.

Extras: Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000. Flowers, fruit, modakas, tamboola.

Ask every priest what their quote includes: the kund, the samidhe, the ghee, the offerings, and travel. A low quote that excludes the samagri is not low.

The short version

A Ganapathi homam is the short, simple homa families do before any new start. Book it for early morning. Get the priest’s list a week ahead, and do not forget the durva. Tell your association and deal with the smoke detector. For one priest with samagri, plan for about Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000. For a new house, it often comes before the vastu shanti pooja and the griha pravesh.

A note on the numbers

These are realistic 2026 Bangalore planning bands, based on current priest rates in the city. Your real cost depends on the size of the homam, the number of priests and your locality. Always get an itemised quote before you commit.

Common questions

When should we do a Ganapathi homam?

Before any new beginning: moving into a house, opening a business, buying a vehicle, a birthday, or the start of a big project. Many families also do it on Sankashti Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi. Early morning is the traditional time.

How much does a Ganapathi homam cost in Bangalore?

For one priest with samagri, plan for roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 in 2026. A bigger homam with more priests or a large number of offerings, such as 108 or 1,008 modakas, costs more. Always ask what is included: the homa kund, samidhe, ghee and the offerings.

Can we do a Ganapathi homam in an apartment?

Usually yes, with notice to your association. Use a proper homa kund on bricks and sand, open the windows, and ask the facility manager about the smoke detector in that room. A Ganapathi homam is small, so the smoke is less than a vastu homa, but it is still real fire.

What do we need to arrange?

Usually the priest brings the homa samagri. You arrange flowers, fruit, coconuts, betel leaves and nuts, a Ganesha idol or picture, a lamp, and the naivedya, often modakas or kozhukattai. Ask the priest for their list a week ahead.
