A traditional first birthday in Bangalore: the ayushya homam, the lunch, and the party
The first birthday is when the family arrives. Grandparents fly in, the uncles who missed the naming ceremony turn up, and the question changes from “are we doing a party?” to “are we doing the homa, the party, or both, and who is going to tell your mother?”
Here is how a traditional first birthday usually runs in Bangalore, with the homa at its centre, and what each part really costs in 2026.
The homa: what it is and why families do it
An ayushya homa (most families and priests call it the ayushya homam, or ayush homam) is a homa for long life and good health. Ayus means lifespan. Many South Indian families, and plenty of others, do one for the first birthday. Some repeat it on every birthday after, and it is one of the main homas at a shashtipoorthi, the 60th.
It is not a long or heavy ritual. A typical one runs two to three hours:
- Ganapati puja and sankalpa, with the child’s name, gotra and nakshatra
- Punyahavachana, the purification
- Kalasha sthapana, setting up the water pot that is worshipped through the homa
- Navagraha puja, for the nine planets
- The ayushya homa itself, with the offerings into the fire
- Purnahuti, the final offering
- Blessings, with the kalasha water sprinkled on the child, then aarti
Some families add a Mrityunjaya homa or a Navagraha homa. Some do the child’s first haircut (mundan) or ear piercing in the same season. Ask your elders what your family adds, then tell the priest. Do not let the priest decide the list alone (they will rarely suggest fewer homas).
Which day: the star birthday
This is the part that catches people. Families who do an ayushya homa usually do it on the star birthday, the day the child’s birth nakshatra comes round again in the birth month. That can land a few days, or a couple of weeks, before or after the calendar date.
So you may have two birthdays. One with the homa, by the star. One with the cake, by the calendar. Most families are fine with this. The child is one and does not mind at all.
Get the star birthday from the priest a month ahead. Then check it against the long weekends, the grandparents’ tickets, and whether the clubhouse is free.
Apartment rules: check before you book anything
A homa means real fire and real smoke, inside a flat. In Bangalore, that means a short conversation with your association before you fix anything.
Things to check:
- Is open fire allowed inside flats? Most allow a homa with notice. A few do not.
- The smoke detector. Many newer apartments have them in every room. Ask the facility manager whether it can be covered or switched off for the morning, and who will do it. Six fire-alarm sirens and a security guard at the door is not the blessing you planned.
- The kund. Use a proper homa kund on bricks and sand, not on the floor. Your priest may bring one; ask.
- The neighbours. A short WhatsApp in the building group the evening before saves a lot of trouble.
If the flat does not work, the clubhouse often does, and so does a small hall. Some families do the homa at a temple hall and the lunch at home.
The child and the smoke
The one-year-old needs to be there for the sankalpa at the start and the blessings at the end. That is perhaps fifteen minutes. The rest of the time, keep them in the next room or near an open window with someone they like.
Tell the priest the child’s nap and meal timings when you book. A good priest will start the sankalpa when the child is fed and happy, and will not mind a short wait. The new outfit can go on just before the blessings. (Before that, it will get puréed carrot on it. It always does.)
Homa, lunch, party: putting the day together
Most families choose one of three shapes:
- Homa and lunch only. Morning homa, banana-leaf lunch, everyone home by three. Close family and elders. This is the calmest version.
- Homa in the morning, party in the evening. The traditional part for the family, the cake and balloons for the friends, the colleagues and the other one-year-olds from the building. Two different guest lists, two different menus. More work, but everybody gets the function they wanted.
- Homa on the star birthday, party on the calendar date. Two smaller days instead of one big one. Easier on the child, harder on the out-of-town relatives.
If you do the evening party, the kids’ birthday at home guide covers that half.
What it costs in 2026
Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.
Priest and samagri: Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000. A single priest with homa samagri sits at the bottom. A second priest, an added Mrityunjaya or Navagraha homa, or a priest coming from across the city pushes it up. Online platforms list remote ayushya homa packages around Rs 11,000, which gives you a useful reference for the homa alone. Always check if dakshina, samagri, the kund and travel are included.
Lunch: the biggest line. For 40 guests, a traditional banana-leaf lunch at home is roughly Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000, including the minimum-order effect. For 80 guests, Rs 28,000 to Rs 55,000.
Decor: Rs 3,000 to Rs 20,000. Flowers and a thoranam for the homa, a simple backdrop for family photos. If you also do a balloon party in the evening, that is a separate line.
Extras: Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000. New clothes, tamboola, fruit, sweets, return gifts for elders, and the clubhouse if you need it.
Realistic totals:
- Homa and lunch at home, about 40 guests: Rs 45,000 to Rs 80,000
- Homa and lunch in a clubhouse or small hall, about 80 guests: Rs 70,000 to Rs 1,20,000
- Homa in the morning and a party in the evening: roughly Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000, depending mostly on the party
Grandparents arriving, star birthday unclear, flat full of balloons?
Tell us the birthday and headcount
That is exactly what Event Maami is for. A maami will call you back, help you fix the day and the shape of it, and send you a clear cost. No charge for the conversation.
The short version
Get the star birthday from the priest a month ahead. Check your apartment’s rules on fire and smoke alarms before you book anything else. Keep the child away from the smoke except for the start and the end. Decide early whether you want a homa and lunch, or a homa and a party. A homa with lunch at home for 40 people costs about Rs 45,000 to Rs 80,000, and lunch is the largest part of it. If this is your first big function since the naming ceremony and the annaprashan, you already know the hardest lesson: decide the guest list first, and everything else follows.
A note on the numbers
These are realistic 2026 Bangalore planning bands, based on current priest, catering and decor rates in the city. Your real cost depends on headcount, locality, and what your family’s custom includes. Always get an itemised quote before you commit.
Common questions
What is an ayushya homa?
A homa for long life and good health (ayus means lifespan). Many South Indian families do it for a child's first birthday, and some repeat it on later birthdays. It is usually a 2 to 3 hour homa with Ganapati puja, a kalasha, Navagraha puja and the main ayushya homa, ending with the purnahuti and blessings.
Should it be on the birth date or the birth star?
Most families who do an ayushya homa use the star birthday: the day the child's birth nakshatra falls in the same lunar or solar month as the birth. That can be a few days or even a couple of weeks away from the calendar date. Many families do the homa on the star birthday and the cake on the calendar date. Ask your elders which your family follows.
How much does a first birthday ayushya homa cost in Bangalore?
The priest and samagri cost roughly Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000, depending on how many priests and homas. With lunch for about 40 guests at home, the total is usually Rs 45,000 to Rs 80,000. Add an evening party and it goes to roughly Rs 1 to 2 lakh.
Can we do a homa in an apartment?
Usually yes, but check with your association first. Some apartments need notice, some ask you to cover or switch off the smoke detector in that room, and a few do not allow open fire inside flats. Use a proper homa kund on bricks and sand, keep windows open, and keep a bucket of water nearby.
Is the smoke safe for a one-year-old?
Keep the child out of the room for most of the homa. They only need to be present for the sankalpa at the start and the blessings at the end. Sit them near an open window or in the next room in between. Tell the priest this when you book.
