Upanayanam in Bangalore: the thread ceremony, day by day, and what it costs

9 October 2026

You have a boy of about eight, a muhurta in April, and a family WhatsApp group that has already started arguing about the hall, the menu and whether the boy’s head will be shaved (it depends, and the grandmother will decide).

The upanayanam is the biggest function before a wedding for many families. It deserves a plan, and the plan starts two or three months ahead.

What it is

The upanayanam is the sacred thread ceremony. The boy receives the sacred thread (yajnopavita, called poonal in Tamil homes and janeu in North Indian homes) and is taught the Gayatri mantra by his father. This is called brahmopadesham. From that day, he is expected to do sandhyavandanam, the daily prayers.

It is mainly done in Brahmin families, and in some other communities that wear the thread. The age, the order of rituals and the number of days vary a lot between Smartha, Madhva, Iyengar, Iyer, Telugu, Bengali (the paita) and North Indian families. Your family priest is the authority here, more than for any other function.

When

  • Age: usually 7 to 12. The traditional texts give the 8th year for many families.
  • Season: February to May is the peak, in the summer holidays and in the good months of Uttarayana. The search numbers peak in April too, which tells you how many families are booking at the same time.
  • Muhurta: the priest fixes the date and time. Ask for two or three options before you book the hall.

The order of events

The details depend on your tradition. A common shape over two days:

The day before (or early the same morning)

  • Udakashanti, the purification with sanctified water
  • Nandi, honouring the ancestors
  • In some families, the first haircut (chaula) if it was not done earlier. See the mundan guide

The main day

  1. The boy’s last meal with his mother (in many homes, a meal they eat together from one plate)
  2. Wearing the thread (yajnopavita dharana) with the priest’s mantras
  3. Brahmopadesham. The father teaches the boy the Gayatri mantra, under a silk cloth, with the priest guiding
  4. Bhiksha. The boy asks for alms, first from his mother, then from other women of the family. The family gives rice, sweets, money or gifts
  5. Samidhadhana, the boy’s first fire offering
  6. Blessings and lunch

Some families do everything in one long day. Others spread it over two. The priest will tell you which.

Hall or home

  • A hall. Most families with 150 or more guests book a hall. Many Bangalore halls have their own list of caterers, and some insist you use them. Ask before you book.
  • A temple hall. Cheaper and simpler, often with a fixed package.
  • Home or the clubhouse. Possible for 50 to 80 guests. The homa needs space and ventilation, so check your apartment rules.

What to book, and when

2 to 3 months ahead

  • The priest (in season, the good ones are booked early)
  • The hall and the caterer

1 month ahead

  • Clothes: the boy’s panche or dhoti, angavastram, and the parents’ silks
  • The thread, the deer skin piece (or its substitute), the danda (staff) and other items from the priest’s list
  • Invitations

1 week ahead

  • Confirm everything. Prepare the list of gotra, nakshatra and family names for the sankalpa.

What it costs in 2026

Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.

Priests: Rs 25,000 to Rs 1,00,000. How to give dakshina to several priests is in the dakshina guide. An upanayanam usually needs a head priest and two to four assistants, for one or two days. Tradition, the number of homas and the season all change the price.

Hall: Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,50,000 for one or two days, depending on the area and the hall’s size.

Catering: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,50,000 for about 200 guests over breakfast and lunch, often two days. The biggest line.

Clothes, gifts and items: Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,00,000. Silks, the boy’s items, tamboola, return gifts, gold for the boy if the family gives it.

Decor, nadaswaram and photography: Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,50,000.

Realistic totals:

  • Small, 50 to 80 guests, home or temple hall: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000
  • Typical, about 200 guests in a hall: Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 6,00,000
  • Large, 400 or more guests, two days: Rs 7,00,000 and up

That is exactly what Event Maami is for. A maami will call you back, help you plan both days, and send you a clear, itemised cost. No charge for the conversation.

The short version

The upanayanam is usually done between 7 and 12, mostly from February to May. Book the priest and the hall two to three months ahead. Follow your family priest on the order of rituals, because traditions differ a lot. A hall function for about 200 guests costs roughly Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 6,00,000, and catering is the biggest line.

A note on the numbers

These are realistic 2026 Bangalore planning bands, based on current priest, hall and catering rates in the city. Your real cost depends on headcount, tradition, the hall and the season. Always get an itemised quote before you commit.

What is brahmopadesham?
