Shashtipoorthi in Bangalore: planning a parent's 60th, from the homas to the kalyanam
Your father turns sixty next year, your mother has mentioned the shashtipoorthi twice, and you and your siblings are in three different cities with one family WhatsApp group. Someone has to start planning. It is probably you.
Here is how a shashtipoorthi works, how to plan it from far away, and what it costs.
What it is
Shashtipoorthi (also shashtiabdapoorthi) marks the completion of 60 years, one full cycle of the 60-year Hindu calendar. In many Karnataka families it is also called ugraratha shanti. It is a thanksgiving for a long life, and a prayer for health in the years ahead.
For many couples, it also includes a renewal of their wedding, the shashtipoorthi kalyanam, with the children and grandchildren watching. For the parents, it is often the most moving function of their lives.
Later milestones follow the same idea: bheemaratha shanti at 70, sathabhishekam at 80 in many Tamil families, and sahasra chandra darshana (seeing a thousand full moons) at about 81.
When
On the parent’s birth star (janma nakshatra) in their birth month, after completing 60 years. This is usually different from the calendar birthday. Give the priest the birth details and ask for the date six months ahead, so the family can book travel.
What happens
Customs vary a lot. A common shape:
- Ganapati puja, punyahavachana and sankalpa
- Kalasha sthapana. Many families set up a large number of kalashas, sometimes 60 or more
- Homas for long life and health, often Ganapathi, Navagraha, Ayushya and Mrityunjaya homas, with ugraratha shanti in many Karnataka families
- Abhisheka. The couple is bathed with the sanctified water from the kalashas
- The kalyanam. The couple exchange garlands and the mangalsutra is tied again, often with the grandchildren nearby
- Blessings. Children and grandchildren take blessings, and the couple blesses everyone
- Lunch
The rituals take three to five hours. Plan for the couple’s comfort: chairs instead of the floor where the priest allows, water, and short breaks. Sixty is young, but four hours by a homa is long at any age.
Planning from far away
Most shashtipoorthis are planned by children who live in other cities or countries. A few things that help:
- One person decides. Everyone can give opinions. One sibling holds the final list.
- Ask the parents what they want. Some want the full function. Some want a temple, close family and quiet. It is their day.
- Book the priest and hall first, four to six months ahead in season.
- Fix a budget and a split between siblings early, in writing. It avoids the only fight worth avoiding.
- Someone on the ground to check the hall, taste the food and meet the priest. If no family member lives in Bangalore, this is exactly the job a maami does.
What it costs in 2026
Planning numbers for Bangalore, not quotes.
Priests: Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,50,000. For giving dakshina to several priests, see the dakshina guide. Several homas and a large kalasha setup usually need four to eight priests. The number of homas and kalashas drives the price.
Hall: Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,50,000 for a day, depending on the area and size.
Catering: Rs 75,000 to Rs 2,00,000 for 150 to 200 guests, often breakfast and a full lunch.
Clothes and gifts: Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,50,000. Silks for the couple, the new mangalsutra if the family gives one, gifts for the family, and return gifts.
Decor, nadaswaram and photography: Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,50,000.
Realistic totals:
- Temple or home, close family, 30 to 50 guests: Rs 75,000 to Rs 2,00,000
- Hall, 150 to 200 guests: Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 7,00,000
- Large, 300 or more guests: Rs 8,00,000 and up

The short version
The shashtipoorthi is on the birth star in the birth month, after 60 years. Ask your parents what they want, then book the priest and hall four to six months ahead. Expect homas, a kalasha abhisheka and often a renewal of the wedding. A hall function for 150 to 200 guests costs about Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 7,00,000. A temple or home function with close family can be much less.
A note on the numbers
These are realistic 2026 Bangalore planning bands, based on current priest, hall and catering rates in the city. Your real cost depends on headcount, the homas and the hall. Always get an itemised quote before you commit.
Common questions
When is the shashtipoorthi done?
On the day the person's birth star (janma nakshatra) falls in their birth month, once they complete 60 years, so in the 61st year. This may not be the calendar birthday. The priest will work out the date from the birth details.
What happens at a shashtipoorthi?
Usually a set of homas for long life and health (such as Ganapathi, Navagraha, Ayushya and Mrityunjaya homas), an abhisheka of the couple with water from many kalashas, and often a renewal of the wedding, with the mangalsutra tied again. Customs differ by family.
How much does a shashtipoorthi cost in Bangalore in 2026?
A hall function for 150 to 200 guests costs roughly Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 7,00,000. A smaller function at a temple or at home, with close family, can be Rs 75,000 to Rs 2,00,000. Priests and catering are the biggest lines.
What if my parent does not want a big function?
Then do a small one. The homas can be done at home or a temple with close family, followed by a lunch. Many families also do a 60th birthday dinner for friends on the calendar date. It is their day, so ask them.
